stripping the top end off the lump was a bit brutal and I broke a stud (bugger) the cure was probably even more brutal, ran a die down it (m8) just to give as much hold as I could get then welded the nut on combined with the heat from the weld and the nut to get a turn on it came out threads all in tact, I can only hope I havent warped anything oh well

just found a 450sc manual online and read a bit more about the 86 cylinder head. if I'v got this right (some guess work) the oddball pipe at the front of the rocker cover is an air intake (from the airbox at a guess but not sure) the air then passes through some carbon filters in the top of the rocker cover then down through the cylinder head and into the exhaust port, supposedly to reduce emissions. I feel a trip to skipton sheet metal coming on as graham (the owner) comes as a highly recommended aluminium welder, should have it blanked off in no time...

Won't a Superdream rocker cover fit and save you some messing ? good shout terry and yes I'v got a superdream rocker cover but its the holes in the head from exhaust port to rocker cover that I then need to block off.

acquired for the princley sum of £25.48 including postage, it looked easier to buy these and polish them up than strip the black paint off the originals

it simply cannot be possible that they had a meeting at honda and said to themselves 'yes thats a great bit of design lets bolt the ugly git to one of our engines' 450 nighthawk oil cooler, if you werent sure.

small steps but its taken ages to getting round to digging out the bead blasting gear. first the ugly duckling (its never going to be a swan) blasted and coated with stove/bbq black (seems quite good stuff for air cooled engines) then the 400/4 hub that looked like it had spent the last 30 years living in a field just primed for now, happy to give it plenty of drying time before a few top coats as I cant afford to order the spokes till payday and same again for the alloy rim, blasted and primed

a nice morning so a bit more painting 3 coats of paint yesterday and 3 coats of lacquer this morning, just needs a couple of weeks to harden off then onto the engine, I chose graphite for this purely so everyone can see its been painted wasnt sure wether to go black or graphite with the starter motor, plumped for graphite (for now) I'll see how it looks when its on the bike.

found another cylinderhead on ebay, so started on that. looks to be in pretty good condition overall I'm probably a bit pedantic but if a component comes out of a particular hole I like it to go back there. next job soda blast and gentle gas flow

as I said a mild gas flow then a soda blast, then paint, then lap the valves back in oh and swap the exhaust studs for stainless. so not much to do then...
