finally found some time (and managed a bit of motivation too) to do a bit more with the bike. thanks to doing a deal with john on here (na44superdream) I now have the set of forks that I want. I was quite happy with the 400 forks I bought on ebay but decided that I couldnt live with the second caliper mount on the right (it would bother me, I know I’m strange). so on to business a strip down and a good clean of the internals didnt reveal any major horrors, all threads good, dampers clear and springs ok the only slight worry was the left hand leg had quite a bit of water in the oil? not quite sure how that got there as the seals were ok. anyway new seals and oil are winging there way towards me (I hope) from the infamous ebay ready for reassembly the next job was to tackle the lower fork legs the one I got from john had been painted black from an alloy finish and was fairly easy to clean up and polish, just a case of a bit of nitromors and a large dollop of elbow grease (which is over-rated in the opinion of this lazy git). the brake side lower leg was something of a different story I’m guessing the black finish was factory and typically honda they’d done it right and bead blasted it before coating it black. nitromors barely touched it, so out with the orbital sander and smooth out the surface ready for more elbow grease. well its been a mucky job but I’m reasonably happy with the results

so to the next job, make a battery box to mount under the seat. thats a really easy sentence to write I wish making the box was as easy. someone on here asked a bit back how I bent the metal, wel it goes a bit like this I cut about halfway through the metal bar with a thin cutting disc in the angle grinder then bend it over in the vice and finally finish it off with the worlds most durable and essential tool, the lump hammer (I know, I’m a thug) then its just a case of budgie blob, sorry weld the internal part of the angle that you just bent to get the strength back. eventually after going through this process more times than I care to think about today I ended up with this car insurance for salvage carswhich fits into the space under the seat nicely and can be bolted in and out and to top it all the battery even slides in and out ok the only slight fly in the ointment here is that I’v scuppered my rectifier mount but its not the end of the world and if I get chance I’ll sort that out one afternoon this week. feels like I’m actually getting somewhere now

had quite a bit on my plate lately (two close members of the family seriously ill and had to find a new job) so as you can imagine bikes have had to take a bit of a back seat for a while. that said I'm partly getting the idea for another superdream project and just obtained this rear wheel fron a cbx250. this wheel now has the nighthawk cush drive in (fits perfectly) but no rear brake plate. a quick search on cms and I discovered the brake plate is the same as the 1982 xl500 (fairly rare but not as rare as cbx250's with spoked wheels) only problem is these models have no torque arm (I assume they have a big lug on the swinging arm) so another trawl through the part numbers showed that the earlier xl's brake shoes were the same so on those grounds I'v ordered an earlier xl brake plate just hope that it fits. still a few odds and ends to find (sprocket side wheel spindle spacer and sprocket studs) but overall I think this will be a better wheel to use in the cafe racer simply because the cushdrive matches the engine better.

just a quickie the xl brake plate arrived, as I mentioned before this ones off an earlier than 82 model with a torque arm and hey presto it appears to fit no problem I'll double check that nothings fouling anything else this weekend but it all seems to be ok. I imagine it might need a new torque arm and some messing about with the rear brake actuating rod but thats what days off were invented for

headache time, if the cb250rs rear wheel fitted nice and easily (and it did) then the cbx wheel doesnt want to play out at all. aligning the sprockets was quite easy just used the original 450sc sprocket spacer and all was good, then I looked at the position of the rim, miles off. so with a fair bit of fiddling and faffing I was able to get a measurement of how far off the rim is for alignment I make it 17mm. I feel a very expensive phone call to martin at hagons coming in the near future...

rear wheel take three just bought this rather scabby looking mess off ebay (in my defence it was less than £30 with the postage) its off an old 400/4 and with a bit of messing around with spacers the sprockets align and more importantly the rim sits nice and central with the spine of the frame (hooray). all I have to do now is track down a cb250rs rear rim and see what size spokes I need.

so take one 400/4 wheel and remove a spoke or two (pattern for hagons) then strip and clean the hub the bearing retainer looks to me like its never been out (the ones I'v come across in the past have been mangled and abused) and talking of mangling and abuse the cush drive bushes took a bit of persuading, but they gave up in the end

head scratching moment, whats this about then? online upload imagetheres a hole in each exhaust port in the cylinder head that seems to connect through to the rocker cover best image hosting freeweird system, I can only guess its something to do with california emissions legislation (again), either that or honda tried to invent a new type of turbo charging...
