ok messed around a bit more. I went to rufforth autojumble today and came back with a few bits and bobs, the bit I’m happiest with is the rear mudguard for the princley sum of £10 (the tin of carb cleaner isnt a permanent feature, honest) this should then give me a traditional look and let me avoid a side mounted plate/rear light. Its a personal thing but I never think specials look finished without some sort of side panels so a lot of head scratching cutting and general beggaring about has got me to this point (again the insulation tapes not permanent, honest) see I like the superdreams lines and so I’m trying to retain a bit of the styling while making it a bit more minimal in the cafe racer way, it also has the advantage (hopefully) of hiding the battery under the seat if I ever get that far...

It should handle well looks like it could run on rails yep the wheels are turning out to be more of a pain in the posterior than I thought (the rims are quite scabby) but they do line up nicely, I wonder if the government could install a monorail network just for me...

the saga so far... havent done much with this for a while simply because its sunny outside which means I’m out on my other bike whenever I get the chance but it is in the back of my mind. so to something simple, buy some handlebar clamps, should be no problem right? wrong. bought some pattern ones off ebay but when they arrived they were such rubbish I wouldnt entertain having them on my bike, so I searched for some that I thought would fit, found a pair off an old honda k on ebay and they looked just the job, missed them by a quid (damn!) so a bit of lateral thinking got me to a pair of suzuki bandit items that happily came with bolts rubbers inner bush the whole shooting match. went to try them for size and the bolts arent long enough (damn again) and the problem here is that theyre m10 bolts with a small hex head to locate inside the clamps. more lateral thinking required, so I bought a couple (4 actually) of m10 stainless caphead bolts hoping (yeah right) that the heads would just sit inside the clamps, no chance. so took the clamps and bolts to work and ground them down on the bench grinder (and yes I know they look a bit rough, but they wont be seen) and hooray I finally have handlebar clamps.

forgot to mention in the last post the nice stainless flanged nuts I bought, thats one thing that has gone right the next part was to find some handlebars that I liked, I must have looked at every set of ace bars on the interweb and can I find a set I’m happy with? no is the short answer, I dont know if its the photography or just me being an overly picky git, but the option I decided to go with was jota bars (getting to be an old fart now and if theyre uncomfortable I can at least adjust them). so loosley set the bars where I think I want them and bolt in to the nicely sorted bandit clamps, hmm too high (I’m old, I’m not that old though) so after spinning them round off the bike and re mounting them effectivley upside down, eureka I have the riding position I’m looking for. its never without a snag though is it? now the bars collide with the tank on full lock (bugger) so another job on the list is to re make the steering stops on the bottom of the headstock to allow a little less lock (hence the old rag on the tank). other than this I found some grips/throttle assembly that I really like and picked up a speedo and a clutch lever assembly (xj900, argh I poisoned my lovely honda with yamaha ) and basically nailed them on to see if theyre going to be ok. the master cylinder is the original nighthawk item as I intend to use the standard US front brake set up (all refurbished, eventually). it shouldnt really be this hard should it? how to deactivate account

Love the carb cleaner parked on the rear guard... is it a more cost effective NOS system?? .. be a right bugger to lean back and hit the nozzle though. Wondering what throttle body that it? kind of looks like an old Builtwell 7/8?

the throttle assembly’s just a pattern thing I bought off ebay purely because I liked the look and style of the grips, I wouldnt say its the best quality in the world but it feels perferctly usable (unlike the naff handlebar clamps) and I’d call the set a bit of a bargain at £20 saying that I should probably reserve judgement until the things actually up and running again.

well it certainly looks the part. I wanted to get Biltwell whisky double 7/8 throttle body but they don't seem to do them anymore. Just the 1" in the double.

carb cleaner back thrown on garage floor where it clearly belongs. had a lot of faffing about over the last week fitting the rear mudguard and inner mudguard, tail piece and seat in such a way that a its strong and b it all lines up right also worth remembering that sooner or later I’ll have to be able to get at things to make a repair or charge the battery or well, whatever so I tried to put some thought into how I did this but as with all specials there will end up being a compromise somewhere along the line. I wont bother with pics of the mudguards etc as it doesnt really look any different (except the tin of carb cleaners gone). had more fun stripping out the spokes, a job I’v never done before, I managed to get a few loose without any problems then came across quite a number that didnt want to undo. the solution was to take a good pic or two for the spoke pattern then out with the angle grinder, that soon sorted them, I kept an inner and outer so my spoke supplier can match them. then stripped the hub of bearings seals etc and bead blasted the hub and the rim (does anyone know of a decent modern degreaser? I’m having to use petrol as its the only thing that actually works) and shot a couple of coats of self etching primer (belt and braces) over both parts.
