Air intake problem, such as some kind of insect or other small beastie nest blocking the left intake only, perhaps in the black rubber section between the carb and air box. Very rich mixture the result, no matter how the carb is set.

Thanks you guys taking part, just a bit off fun. Keeps the brain ticking over. So the moral of the story is double check those gudgeon pins retaining clip are secure as you won't know until the damage in done. I have only ever seen that once before. I got it checked at my local machine shop and they said it's too deep to rebore (max 1 mm ). They said a new liner could be fitted if I had one. I've found a second hand head on eBay for £50 so I'll see what I can do with that.

I got a cylinder honing tool. I was hoping to clean the bores and get a new set of pistons. Worst case rebore.

Hi Theaaman. If you get stuck for a cylinder barrel, I have one here but I am away from home for most of the coming week so probably wouldn't be able to get it to you until next weekend. I think you live in Surrey. Not a million miles from me. PM me if you think that I could help. Mike.

I managed to pick this up for £60, but I am most probably going to replace the rings and hone the bores.

that's the way to go. check gaps and only replace if gaps are not in limits, hone bores and replace piston pins and circlips, ring sets are cheap enough if you have to replace. you have the chance to weld up the useless oilway at the base of the block (if it has one) which is recommended to prevent oil leaks.

I haven't received the parts yet. Then I can check ring gaps. My old cylinder piston ring gaps were ok except the oil rings, they were badly worn.
