I'd read a bit about soda blasting and seen it done on various programmes on tv and thought it looked the ideal thing for cleaning/stripping air cooled engines. I already upgraded my compressor to a 50litre 3hp model (it can only just keep up with any type of blasting, bigger and more powerful would be better) so bought a cheap gun off ebay and a couple of bags of soda (10kg). this is about as far as my set up would reasonably go, thats without spending forever and a day trying to blast every bit of paint off on the positive side its taken all the crud and muck off and the paint thats left has a dull finish (like paint thats been flatted down with wet and dry for a respray), so I deemed that to be ok for repainting. on the down side, if I was trying to get the engine back to bare alloy, well I think you'd need a proper commercial set up to do it and as soda, unlike most blast media, is a one hit wonder I'd guess it costs quite a bit. overall I'm happy enough with the results I got for my own purposes, the neighbours however slightly less so...

Not a fan of bare alloy cylinders & heads. My 400N was aqua blasted a few years ago & the 250 2 years ago & both keep getting covered in white powdery stuff, needing frequent cleaning off. My 400NA was painted 7 years ago & just gets the odd wash with the rest of the bike.

Yes it does Carl but it's easier to clean acf with dust on than corrosion or rust there's a bike that comes into daves for a service and it's a 03 bandit with mega miles on it the fella rides is all over Europe in all weather and when it gets a wash it's like brand new all he does is cover it with acf And I rub over my engine cases with some on a rag and when it starts looking darker I just rub it again with acf and it looks brand new again it's a fiddle on the fins but that's something I just put up with if you love cleaning it's fine and if you don't it's fine a good wash Down a couple of times a year but you now it's great underneath
