I think I've got a handle on this now, it seems when Honda manufacture the Gear shaft they drill completely through the shaft for ease of manufacture, probably so they can clean out any swarf, then they plug the shaft on the sprocket end with a small metal cap, it,s this cap I've punctured
This means that as Graham pointed out that I can access the other end of the shaft from the clutch side. Hopefully I can drift out the cap from there and replace with one of these 10mm core plugs I ordered from fleabay which looks just like it.
I won't be able to work on this for a week so watch this space

Had a free day today waiting for engineer to change our water meter so finished working on the output shaft . So after removing cover and clutch I managed to remove the old plug by drifting out from clutch side, not easy as half the shaft is obscured. Knocked the new cap in the sprocket end with a suitable sized socket and put everything back together, started up and hurray no oil leak.
