I'm currently fitting a cb400tii engine into my superdream and very pleased with it I am, from close inspection of internals and how the general original finish still shines I'd say it has only done less than 5k. One problem was the sprocket was stuck on and no amount of hammering was shifting it, no problem I thought out with the 2 legged puller job done. Started her up today runs great but leaking oil from seal behind sprocket but on closer inspection the seal is ok the oil is coming out of the centre of the countershaft seems my puller has pushed in the centre making a hole. So be warned the end of the countershaft you can see sticking out of your sprocket is only about a mm thick and hollow inside, right into the engine.
Next question can you remove the bottom crankcase without disturbing the top end?

wouldnt a blob (and if I did it it would be a blob) of mig weld on the end of the shaft cure the problem, quicker and easier than a partial strip down.

Yes thought of that but can see the flap of metal just hanging on inside and I dred to think of what damage that could cause, so safety first. Out with the shaft then I will try plugging with weld.  |

Oooh, my kind of puzzle this. My experience of engine dismantling doesn't stretch to the complexities of such a "modern" engine so I would have to think up a way to retrieve or fix the flap in place. From eBay I have a whole variety of dental picks and tweezers I would bend, cut short etc as the work demanded. With careful cleaning epoxy is your friend too. If the flap were to fall off then I suppose a dismantle would be required but can it really fall into the 'box or would it just lie in the bore of the mainshaft?

might be that you could trigger the mig wire out a bit longer than usual past the flap and quickly weld back, thus capturing the loose bit of metal, again just thinking out loud for an easy but solid solution

As the flap has been pushed in a half inch doesn't look like I can pick it out, if I could then it would be a nice idea to weld the end or use jb weld but as the centre of the shaft forms part of the oil circuit and a bit of weld spatter would be difficult to avoid I've decided to remove the shaft to try and fix out of harms way then I can get a good look from the other side and maybe push it back to weld in place or at worst remove it and plug the end with weld.

Just remembered I have a gearbox stripped down on my project bike. The shaft seen on the above post photo is the same one as pictured blow. the shaft is hollow to the depth of the screwdriver laying beside it . so the open end should be accessible from inside the clutch cover.   |
