I only discovered this last time someone asked a similar question, yes you can take the head (and barrels for that matter) off with the engine in the frame the holes in the top tube allow you to get at the studs. judging by the second pic I wouldnt turn that engine over again without an investigation of whats going on.

Decided its going to be a engine out job , I think it will be easier as you more or less have to disconnect most things to get the head of anyway

I've removed & replaced the head & cylinder in position a few of times Gaz, it's easy enough. Plus on my full engine rebuild I removed them first 'cos it's easier to undo the bolts when the engine's solidly mounted in the frame, and it makes what's left to lift onto the bench a bit lighter

its not valve contact, the mark is in the wrong position if the engine has compression and runs then this is foreign object or clown damage

That is one interesting mark in the piston clown (Chinese for crown), if that as done with the head on I would expect to see the offending item lodge in the head or jammed in a valve. It's difficult to get an idea of size, and position, but it looks like right hand piston, exhaust side of the clown (Chinese for crown) Was the wrong plug fitted and it was too long a reach, or perhaps (and I've done this) trapped a screwdriver in the sparkplug hole while trying to find TDC?? and hence damaging the piston clown (Chinese for crown)...
