I'm thinking of buying a Raleigh chopper Mk1 or Mk2 i don't want a perfect one as they are expensive, I'm just after a bike that needs a tidy up & TLC, anyone got any tips or knowledge I'm all ears.

I had one of the first MK1's sold by Halfords in Glasgow when they first came out (orange, it was). It was a little big for me, but I soon grew into it. I loved that bike! I do fancy one, but the nice ones are motorcycle money and I always spend any cash on something with an engine instead.

I was on my delivery the other day ( I'm a postie) & I happend to mention to a fireman on my delivery that I was after a 70s chopper mk1 or mk2 & he informed me he had sold one last year, then he said "just a sec" he went into garage & came out with this a unused Raleigh chopper front wheel happy days & good old fireman Sam free img

So you're buying in instalments then?

I’m in the same position as you and am looking to buy a complete bike and I’d consider anything. I had a Mk1 back in the day so I’m going to try and find one in Horizon Blue. I’d consider a project but they’re becoming very expensive to restore. The American market had 5 and even 10 speed versions, there was also a drop handlebar “Sprint” Jobbie!
Good luck with your search but you’ll find you’re not alone, they’re very much in demand currently, be prepared to dig deep!!

Yes Ian I'm finding that out I've been looking & I have had a few bids on complete bikes but have lost out so far, I want to get one that needs a respray & genral tidy up & I want it to be able to be used as I've a 10 year old lad & a few grandchildren that I would like to see having a go so I'm not going to go to overboard on it, just a very tidy looking bike I'm hoping to achieve

I always wanted one but it never happened but I will get one soon You’ll find one mate, the Mk1’s fetch the big money in almost any condition but Mk2’s can be had for “sensible” money, Mk3’s just don’t do it for me but they have a following. Hold out for a clean Mk2, it’s a waiting game mate. You’ll find one. Good luck...

the chopper I remember had 3 speed sturmey archer gears The UK bikes were indeed sturmey 3 speeds, our overseas cousins had the 5 and 10 speed variants. My Mk 1 had the black gear knob with the 3 “R”s on it, the Mk2’s had the T bar gear knob. There were a number of differences but notably the change of frame (kink in rear frame legs) to minimise the problem of unintended wheelies and the shorter seat to prevent “croggies”!!

I remember the choppers coming out in the 70s what was the difference between Mk1 and Mk2? [b Frame was changed to stop unintentional wheelies, shorter seat with warning strap, rear carrier, non adjustable handlebars, gear knob, paint schemes and decals, different crank and pedals, cable covers non ribbed, plastic covers on brake levers, wheels non dimpled on mk2, handlebar grips, different sissy bar, the list is endless... I’m no expert by any means but when you’re in the market it’s surprising what you can find. “Chopper Central” is a good place to start.. (google it) 😀👌
